HOMESCHOOLING
To homeschool in North Carolina, you must file a Notice of Intent with the NC Division of Non-Public Education (DNPE) and ensure the primary teacher has at least a high school diploma or equivalent.
HOMESCOOL REQUIREMENT:
Teacher Qualifications: The parent, guardian, or teacher must hold a high school diploma or a GED.
Notice of Intent: You must file a Notice of Intent with the DNPE once before beginning your homeschool (typically accepted when your oldest child turns age 7, which aligns with the state compulsory attendance age).
School Year Schedule: Instruction must run on a regular schedule for at least 9 calendar months of the year, excluding standard holidays and vacations.
Required Subjects: Instruction must be in English and cover basic academic areas including English grammar, reading, spelling, and mathematics.
Standardized Testing: Each student must take a nationally standardized achievement test (measuring English grammar, reading, spelling, and math) at least once each academic year. Test results must be kept on file for at least one year and made available if requested by the DNPE.
Record Keeping: You must maintain ongoing annual attendance records and up-to-date immunization records for each student on site
Standardized Testing:
In North Carolina, the law requires that you administer a nationally standardized achievement test once per school year. The test must measure at least four specific areas: English grammar, reading, spelling, and mathematics.
Because the state does not mandate a specific pass/fail cutoff score or require you to submit the scores automatically, your choice depends entirely on your student's learning style, your budget, and whether you prefer testing at home or using a certified professional.
WHY HOMESCHOOL
Starting a homeschool journey is incredibly rewarding, but it can feel overwhelming at first. Because North Carolina gives parents a lot of flexibility in how, what, and when they teach, you have the freedom to design an environment where your child can truly thrive.
